Commander Luke Graham is selected to lead the first manned mission to Mars. Upon setting foot on the red planet, the team discovers an ancient, domelike structure which appears to be a beacon. The dome destroys the team and leaves Luc injured. The recently widowed Jim McConnell leads the rescue mission. When they arrive, they find Lke surprisingly alive, and he has spent the time alone learning the secrets of the mysterious construct. The question now becomes: do they enter the dome and answer humanity's oldest question, perhaps risking their lives in doing so, or return to Earth with what they do know and return in force with equipment and supplies?

I saw this movie. I recorded it after a free weekend of Showtime. I thought it was not as bad as everyone is doing what it should. In fact, I liked it. The only part that I was crazy about was not the end, etc., but that's because I like reality-based film. Sci-Fi/Fantasy can not go into, but I prefer the real end. It is the main reason I do not like Stephen King movies / books. The end to the "necessary?" Ugh, Puh-LEEZ. Anyway, I have not seen 2001: A Space Oddessey, so it has nothing on the basis of comparison. I think they are really in science fiction who do not enjoy this movie. Wait, do not think * * * but know *. But for those just looking for something to do, this is a nice movie. I may be biased, however. I am a big fan of the main actors - Tim Robbins, Gary Sinise, and Jerry O'Connell. I knew about Sinise, but the other 2 guys were a pleasant surprise. And the line "Phil is not here because they are 5 minutes!" or the way it was, was hysterical. I give it a 6 out of 10. (but hey, I also liked "The New Guy.")
