A comedic biopic focused on the life of fictional jazz guitarist Emmett Ray. Ray was an irresponsible, free-spending, arrogant, obnoxious, alcohol-abusing, miserable human being, who was also arguably the best guitarist in the world. We follow Ray's life: bouts of getting drunk, his bizzare hobbies of shooting rats and watching passing trains, his dreams of fame and fortune, his strange obsession with the better-known guitarist Django Reinhardt, and of course, playing his beautiful music.

Woody Allen has control on the history of the cinema saying tools that can do what he wants. A mixture of "documentary" comments about what is happening with the characters, and simple, yet excellent feature of the footage, Allen once again demonstrates why it is one of the greatest movie: Sweet and Lowdown directors of our time. Good plot, great performances, cleverly constructed characters, excellent camera work ... can we get?

Some say that Woody Allen has lost his "magic." But do not think so. And "Sweet and Lowdown" is a great example of how a good director (and writer) is Woody Allen. But not only thanks to Woody Allen for "Sweet and Lowdown" is a successful image. Sean Penn is terrific in the head of the patethic not, but talented, guitar-player Ray Emmett. Penn was so good that he was awarded an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. No matter if you like Woody Allen and Sean Penn, because this is a good picture. From beginning to end this is a pleasure. Unfortunately, this Sweet and Lowdown Drama film was not a success in theaters, but, again, "Citizen Kane" was a box office bomb?

In my opinion, there are more than one type of Woody Allen film. There is the madness of old movies such as Bananas and Sleeper, the comic-serious "serious" films with "meaning" as Annie Hall, Husbands and wives and Unmounting Harry and then there are what I think Woody Allen's "love notes" if you take the expression, films such as The Purple Rose of Cairo, Bullets Over Broadway and Sweet and Lowdown, movies in general period pieces that are (in general, the'30 's more or less) that are essentially the mix of Allen Allen is particularly concerned about something, as in jazz and Sweet Lowdown (specifically guitar and jazz Django Reinhardt). The result is great, which is typical of a Woody Allen film. Allen recently survey these films are almost always well worth seeing. Sean Penn plays an egocentric, selfish creep talent. I'm going to leave any interpretation to the previous statement to the Gentle Reader. Why was nominated for an Oscar is beyond me. Samantha Morton, on the other hand, gives a sweet, if it is almost a note yield, which essentially summarizes the Sweet and Lowdown Drama film worth the time and effort to see, but a note movie. If you like this side of Woody (and me), that is worth seeing.
