The pathetically shy LV lives the life of a recluse listening to her late fathers old records in her room and in the process driving her abusive, loud-mouthed mother, Mari Hoff, to distraction. At night, however, when her father's ghost visits, LV sings the songs of the great divas such as Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe and Shirley Bassey. One evening LV is overheard by one of her mother's loathsome boyfriends, the disastrous dead-end talent scout Ray Say, who recognizes her innate talent and realizes this is his last big chance for the glittering prizes. Gambling everything Ray Say forces LV to appear at a local run-down, seedy night club run by Mr. Boo. As preparations for the big event proceed apace LV meets the equally shy Billy, a pigeon-racing telephone engineer and they form a tentative, gentle friendship. The big night finally arrives and everything is in readiness the band, the club and even a big agent from London, but what about LV?

Spoilers here. Some old good performances here. History and not prepared, but never mind. I suggest you check this first, and then immediately see "Moulin Rouge". That really seems to fit so well that manifest destiny. This way of seeing this DVD film Little Voice becomes self-referential in a study on why the players do what they do, how they used song stereotypical characters, and what is the performance,

*** There are spoilers in this review *** Here in the U.S., we do not see much of Jane Horrocks, except in Absolutely Fabulous repetitions, and that is a shame because it has an incredible voice. She is perfectly cast as LV (Little Voice) in this DivX film Little Voice about an airtight wallflower living in the memories of his doting, late father suffering from the cruelty of his mother over the top white-trash histrionics (Brenda Blethyn, in a fantastic performance). Michael Caine, playing an oily, decaying nightclub promoter, smells money when he hears the heartbreaking song of LV. Caine is simply perfect in the role. You could call this a kind of Pygmalion, not because LV happens to fame and fortune, as expected, but it finally breaks free suffocating presence of her mother and meets a handsome man (Ewan McGregor). This is wonderful entertainment. I recommend this movie.

This DVD movie Little Voice by Mark Herman has enough interesting that what really keeps your interest. Brenda Blethyn was nominated for an Oscar for her performance and she deserved it. As the mother cried and brass philandered her husband in an early death, is hilarious. I must say that this is one of the best performances I've seen of Michael Caine as a loser who sees all his dreams go up in smoke. Jim Broadbent was also good that Mr. Boo, not a comic and filmmaker. Jane Horrocks was fascinating when she sang, in particular by Somewhere Over The Rainbow. Ewan McGregor was great as the perfect complement to it. The music is beautiful and nostalgic performances were first class.
