| Jane Austen's novel, possibly his best, comes to the screen in another version, made in America Gwyneth Paltrow in the lead alongside Jeremy Northam as Mr. Knightley. This is an adaptation that remains faithful to the original premise, and to a certain kind of cinema. Sophie Thompson is performing well and playing like the talk of Miss Bates, Paltrow and maintained a convincing English accent throughout. A curious thing is that in the scene where Emma and Knightley have danced together to the same music as the dance in the 1990s, the BBC Pride and Prejudice between Elizabeth and Darcy. This seems to jar somewhat, as if they could not find another piece of music! Perhaps the only two adaptations overlap. The 'Emma' compares well with others, but still there is not much between it and the TV in a long time, as much as Emma with Kate Beckinsale and Mark Strong as Knightley. |
| This is an adaptation OK, but not as good as the TV version. The actors are generally good, but I found it rather damp Jeremy Northam as Mr. Knightley, especially in comparison with strong brand in the TV version. Gwyneth Paltrow is good and his English accent is quite good, but again, I preferred the Kate Beckinsale Emma. There are excellent supporting performances by Toni Collette, Juliet Stephenson and Sophy Thompson. The script is too often played for laughs, the book is a comedy, but there are many set-piece gags here, and also the subplot of Frank Churchill is almost completely absent. My biggest criticism is the landscape. It is too exuberant. England has never been the case. It looks like a box of chocolate. Only Americans would like this. Despite these criticisms, I liked this film, but we recommend adjusting the TV more. |
| I have no idea of how a Texan (the director, Douglas McGrath) and actress Gwyneth Paltrow never thrown, but this watch that again to remember what all the problems about Ms. Paltrow was in the first place! I had long since passed out of the woman and still feel it is quite boring in his Oscar winner "Shakespeare in Love", but gets all time here - it is almost perfect as Emma Woodhouse. You may have won her Oscar for Shakespeare, but it should be remembered for this. Of course, it is surrounded by a great supporting cast including Toni Collette, Greta Scacchi, Juliette Stevenson et al ... Jeremy Northam is very appealing as the love interest, even if the script wallows a bit in his declaration of love to Paltrow (in the process, allowing all the tension to drain out of their relationship), in several years, Ewan's hair is a little easier to take than in el'96 and, personally, I think Alan Cumming puckish presence in a grate thing today. But the standout is undoubtedly Sophie Thompson (sister of Emma Thompson, daughter Phyllida Law) as Miss Bates; this version you need is a scene in which he reconciles with Miss Emma Bates, as is the character of which no purpose is stated. The Emma Comedy movie is worth seeing (again, even) for her performance alone. Overall, this has aged beautifully with charm to spare and more than enough subtlety to order the British class system. Well worth a rental (because its Paltrow unlikely to be this good again - but we will always be Emma). |
